North of Damascus, on the flank of a dry valley above the town of Nebek. You cannot drive up to the monastery: the road ends at the valley floor and the rest is climbed on steps. The building sits on the rock, looking out over bare ground.
Getting there
About eighty kilometres north of Damascus, on the M5 to Nebek and then east. An hour and a half by car. The last stretch is on foot: some 350 steps, thirty to forty minutes.
How long it takes
Two and a half hours including the climb, and more for anyone who wants to linger in the church.
What is there
The walls of the small church are covered in fresco. The layers are dated to the 11th and 12th centuries: saints, mounted figures, and on the west wall a Last Judgement spread across the whole surface. Wall painting of this scale and this state of preservation is rare in the region. The monastery was repaired and refounded from the 1980s and is kept alive by a community.
What most people miss
In the Last Judgement on the west wall, look at the lower register. The faces are handled differently from those above — another hand, another period.
Tips
- The last stretch is about 350 steps; take water and a hat
- No flash on the frescoes — wait for your eyes to adjust
- Shoulders and knees should be covered
- Give notice before you go; the monastery receives visitors on arrangement
