How many days do you need in Latakia?
The city is half a day: the corniche, the Roman columns, the centre. The rest of the time goes to what surrounds it, and because that lies in two directions it takes two days — one south to Ugarit, one north to Kessab. Squeezing both into one day means spending most of it in the car; Kessab is an hour and a half from the coast on a winding road. In summer heat, save Kessab for the afternoon, where the air is cooler.

Kessab
A mountain town in pine forest north of Latakia, 800 metres up. Where people go to escape the coastal heat, and a place set apart by its Armenian past.

Margat Castle
A Hospitaller castle on a basalt spur south of Baniyas, looking out to sea. Its black stone, its grip on the coast road, what stands inside, and its fall in 1285.

Ugarit
The mound 11 kilometres north of Latakia where one of the earliest alphabets was found. The Bronze Age palace, how long a visit takes, and when to go.
