Can you book anything online in Syria?

The short answer splits in two: holding a place is largely possible, paying online almost never is. Confusing the two is the most common planning mistake — people fail to find Syria on a booking site and conclude that nothing can be arranged in advance. It can. The channel is simply a different one.

Sanctions came off; the payment rail did not go up

The legal side moved fast over two years. The European Union lifted its economic sanctions on 20 May 2025. The United States removed most of its sanctions by executive order on 30 June 2025, and the Caesar Act was repealed on 18 December 2025. The UK has lifted sanctions on some sectors, with others still in place.

None of that means banks and payment companies opened their lines the next morning. In September 2026 the UK Foreign Office still describes restrictions on financial transactions in the country, limits on cash withdrawals, and minimal or no use of electronic payment for buying goods. There is a lag between the change on paper and the reality at the counter, and what a traveller meets is the second one.

Hotels: the room is held, the money is paid on arrival

International booking sites cover Syria very thinly and many hotels appear on none of them. What works is a direct phone call or a message. Prepayment is usually not asked for, because there is no channel to take it through.

In practice that means your correspondence is your reservation. Settle four things in the message and keep the screenshot — your name, the dates, the total, and the currency it is in. A fifth question is the generator hours, since hot water and the wifi depend on them.

Flights: tickets exist, the channel is narrow

Damascus and Aleppo airports operate with a limited number of international flights; the other airports are closed. Fighting has at times suspended flights and closed airports, so holding a ticket is not the same as the flight departing.

On the ticket itself the channel depends on the carrier: some sell through their own site, others only through an agency. Whether a foreign card is accepted also depends on the carrier and is worth asking before you commit. Leaving the departure day free is a precaution here rather than a comfort.

Tours, guides and drivers

These three are the widest of the areas that can genuinely be arranged online. Agencies abroad and local operators inside Syria work by message, and an itinerary can be settled in writing.

Watch the payment. If a deposit is asked for, ask which country and which channel it passes through, and do not send money through anything that gives you no written confirmation. Paying the balance in cash is normal rather than a warning sign — that is how payment works in the country. Write down in advance which currency the balance is due in.

Museums and sites: no online tickets

There is no such thing as an online ticket at a museum or an archaeological site. Tickets are bought at the gate, in cash. The site of DGAM, the body responsible, does work, but what it publishes is mostly news of openings, closures and restoration rather than daily hours and a price list.

The one piece of online preparation that helps is confirmation: have your hotel or guide ask about the place you plan to visit the day before. Arriving at a closed hall costs a morning, and this is the only remedy for it.

Why WhatsApp is the real booking system

Most booking in the country runs over messaging, for three reasons. Identity is tied to a number, so a hotel or a driver without a sign still has a line. The channel runs on data rather than on a card network. And voice notes break the language barrier: whoever cannot type speaks, and whoever cannot follow translates.

What it does not give you is a guarantee. A room held by message rests on mutual trust. The way to compensate is to keep the correspondence concrete, confirm dates twice, and write again the day before you arrive.
