Which apps work in Syria: VPNs, Google Play and geo-blocks

For years most global internet services were out of reach in Syria. The blocks came mostly from the companies: under US sanctions many services cut off Syrian IP addresses, and a VPN became an everyday tool. In 2026 that picture is changing fast. Google Play and Gemini have opened, and the ministry says VPNs will soon be unnecessary. “Soon” is not yet “everything”. This page lists what has opened, with dates, and leaves the unknown as unknown.

Will you need a VPN?

Less and less for everyday use, but it is too early to say never. On 9 July 2026 the Minister of Communications said Syria was close to overcoming its technical restrictions and that users would soon not need tools such as VPNs to reach global platforms. By his account the restrictions had lasted about 47 years.

On 24 August 2026 the United States removed Syria from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, and the ministry described this as the last major obstacle falling. Lifting a designation does not switch a service on the next day, though. Each company reviews its own policy, so services open one at a time. For your messaging, maps or work apps, check before you travel.

Google Play and Google services

Google came back step by step in 2026. In January 2026 the Minister of Communications announced that Google Play could be reached without a VPN and said most Google services were expected to follow. In March 2026 Google’s developer platform became available.

In September 2026 the Unblock Syria initiative announced that, according to what it confirmed directly with Google, the country-level restriction on Gemini had been removed and the service had moved from “blocked” to “available”. It came after 7 months of requests from the initiative and some users. The same report notes that some other services are still under review.

ChatGPT and other services

The most concrete data is a year old. In October 2025 Slack, Airtable and ChatGPT began to open without a VPN on fixed wireless internet lines. At the same time the block stayed in place on Syriatel and MTN mobile lines, where the same sites still needed a VPN.

So the result can depend on the connection: a service may open on one line and not on another, and hotel wifi and the SIM in your phone can give different answers. We found no dated source confirming where these services stand today, so we do not state it here.

What this page does not know

The status in Syria of the App Store and of individual apps — banking, payments, streaming or games — has not been verified. We have no source on the legal status of VPN use either, and we do not comment on it. Announcements say a service is open; only trying it shows whether it works on your account and your line.

What to install before you arrive

You may have no internet for the first hours after landing: buying a SIM means registering at a branch and activation takes time, as the SIM card page explains. So set up your phone on your home connection:

• An offline map app with the Syria map downloaded; the navigation page covers which apps work
• A translation app with the offline Arabic language pack
• Every app you plan to use, fully updated
• Offline copies of your flight, accommodation and insurance documents
