If juice has one address in Damascus, this is it. Hajj Adnan al-Omari — known to everyone as Abu Shaker — opened the shop in 1953, and the family is doing the same job three generations on. There is one product: the cocktail. It goes into the glass in layers, it is built by hand rather than blended, and it changes with whatever fruit is in season.
Where it is
In Salhiyah, on 29 May Street, opposite the parliament building. A small shop; little seating, service standing. The sign says there is no other branch, and that is a warning: shops in Doha and Dubai carry the same name and neither belongs to this one.
What to drink
The cocktail: seasonal fruit puree, honey, fresh cream (ashta) and crushed Aleppo pistachio or cashew on top. There is also fruit salad and jugs of single-fruit juice. The mix is the shop’s own trade; every glass is built by hand.
When to go
Summer evenings are the busiest hour. Go before noon for a quiet glass; in Ramadan the queue reaches the door after iftar.
