The most argued-over address for chicken shawarma in Damascus. Anas began with a single shop in Midan in 1991; the brand has since spread outside Syria, but the original branch is still in the same place, on Al-Jazmatiyah souk. The sandwich comes pressed in thin bread: chicken, garlic sauce (toum), pickled gherkins and chips.
Getting there
In the Midan quarter, on Al-Jazmatiyah, fifty metres before the bridge. A short taxi ride from the Old City, and easy to fold into a walk through the souk.
What to order
The chicken shawarma sandwich. The menu also runs to broasted chicken and plates, but the trade is the sandwich. The toum comes generously here — say so when you order if you would rather have less.
When to go
Reported hours are 10:00 to 02:00 daily; they can change, so ask before you go. Evening and late night are the busiest. Service speed varies at the other branches; take the original shop in Midan.
Tips
- The original branch is in Midan; service speed varies elsewhere
- The toum is generous — ask for less when you order if you prefer
- Pair it with a walk through Al-Jazmatiyah souk
- Cash only

- How this was chosen
- Two kinds of record live here: the dish itself, and the place that serves it. Both are chosen and written by hand; ranking is not for sale and there are no sponsored entries. If a price range is not known for certain, it says so. Venues that serve alcohol are not listed on this site at all.
