How to get to Bosra from Damascus: buses, the Daraa change and the road

Bosra lies 140 kilometres south of Damascus and 40 kilometres from Daraa. Most directions for getting there went out of date in summer 2026: on 1 July 2026 the departure point in Damascus for the Daraa and Suwayda lines moved away from Bab Musalla. Where to board in Damascus

According to an announcement by the Damascus governorate, from 1 July 2026 the Daraa and Suwayda lines leave from the new departure centre on Thalathin Street rather than the old Bab Musalla garage. The governorate said city bus lines would also serve the new centre. On the day of the move, drivers and passengers protested at the Bab Musalla garage and officials said the transfer would be gradual; the same day, traffic jammed at the Al-Kiswah junction.

In practice this means the “Daraa garage at Bab Musalla” in online directions and older guidebooks is no longer correct. Because the move is gradual, ask at your hotel or when you take a taxi where vehicles are leaving from that week. Most people going to Bosra change in Daraa.

No dated source was found for fares or departure times. On 1 January 2026 two zeros were removed from the currency, and after the fuel price rise of 13 September 2026 transport fares are being recalculated; ask the price at the garage and do not rely on older figures.

What is the road like?

The Damascus–Daraa highway is one of the busiest roads in the country, and not free of accidents: on 8 July 2026 a Lebanese passenger bus crashed on it, killing 4 people and injuring 31. Maintenance to repair dangerous damage on the Daraa–Bosra road was completed, according to a SANA report of 10 September 2026.

There is no current source to recommend a place to stay in Bosra; visits are planned as a day trip from Damascus. The trip is long and involves a change, so the safest pattern is to leave early and finish the return before dark.

Coming from Jordan

What to expect in Bosra

According to a SANA report of 14 September 2026, more tourist groups and foreign delegations are coming to Bosra. More than 250 solar-powered street lights have been installed, roads have been repaired, and an amusement park reopened in July 2026. Restoration work continues at the Roman theatre and the citadel. The same report says many archaeological sites were damaged during the war years, and signs of destruction are visible in the town.

Two dated security incidents are worth knowing. On 20 February 2026 an armed attack by unidentified gunmen in Bosra injured 2 people, and a temporary curfew was declared. On 10 September 2026 the Daraa civil defence carried out controlled detonations of war-era mines near Bosra.
