One day from Daraa to Izra

Two ends of the Hauran in a day. A mosque going back to the early Islamic centuries in the old town of Daraa, the junction of the Hejaz railway at the edge of it, and forty kilometres north a church built in 515 and still in use. There and back is eighty-four kilometres, all of it flat asphalt. This is not a route for scenery; you drive it to look at buildings and to understand how one plain was built up in layers.

The route

Start in Daraa al-Balad, the old town: the Mosque of Omar is there and the last stretch into the quarter is done on foot. From there it is two kilometres north-east to the station, a five-minute detour. Then take the Damascus road north: Izra is forty kilometres, forty-five minutes. You come back the same way, or carry on from Izra to Damascus and end the day there, eighty kilometres further.

Timing

Be in the old town at 08:30: the mosque is empty after the dawn prayer and the light comes into the courtyard from the side. Move to the station at 10:00; half an hour is enough. Head north at 11:00 and be in Izra before noon — the church is visited outside service times, and the middle of the day is the easiest window. Give the church forty-five minutes, an hour if you also ask after the town’s second Byzantine church. Be back in Daraa around 15:00, or drive on to Damascus. Do not add Bosra to this day: it is forty kilometres east and it is a day of its own.

Take care

There are ruined buildings in Daraa al-Balad and a real risk of unexploded ordnance in rubble — stay on the street and out of the debris. Railway ground can count as official premises, so ask before you photograph. The church at Izra is not a monument site but a working parish church: ask in the town about service times and do not walk in during one. Armed incidents ran through the governorate during 2025 and military operations continue in its western countryside; check the route locally before you set out. Keep your passport and entry stamp on you at checkpoints.
