It stands on the mound in the middle of the city. The stone bridge on your right as you climb the ramp is Ayyubid — you still enter the citadel today by the same road as eight hundred years ago.
What to see
The real monument is the entrance block itself: the bridge, the steep ramp and the bent passage with its three successive gates explain the castle’s defensive logic in a single move. Inside are the carved wooden ceiling of the throne hall, two mosques and the remains of a bath. From the walls the city reads in a full circle — the covered roofs of the souqs, the courtyard of the Great Mosque, the rebuilding neighbourhoods, all on one plane.
Visiting
Entry is 1500 SYP. The ramp is steep and shadeless; going up early in the morning is the right call for both the light and the heat. Flat shoes help inside — the ground is uneven stone in places.
Take care
The citadel was damaged in the war and repairs proceed section by section; some interiors may be closed. Ask at the gate which parts are open.
