A day around the edge of Damascus: the Panorama, the Ghouta and Qasioun

Seeing Damascus only from inside the walls tells you nothing about how the city was built. This day goes outside with three stops: the museum at the north entrance, the oasis to the east and the mountain that overlooks both. 41 kilometres in all, by car. The order is deliberate. Qasioun comes last, because from there you take in everything you drove through in a single view.

The route

Head north out of the centre. The October War Panorama Museum stands on Six Tishreen Avenue at the northern entrance of the city; its round body shows from the road and the stone reliefs are on the outer wall. From there turn east: the apricot and walnut orchards of the Ghouta are watered by the branches of the Barada, and the roadside stalls in season undercut the market. Walk in the orchards; do not set out to visit the towns. At the end of the day climb west to Qasioun, half an hour from the centre. Do not stop at the first viewpoint you reach — carry on a little.

Timing

Be at the museum at 09:00; the grounds have no shade and grow heavy in the afternoon. Ask before you set out whether the door is open, as the situation has been unsettled since 2024; if it is shut, the reliefs can still be seen. Move on to the Ghouta towards midday, when the stalls are full. Go up Qasioun around 16:00 and make your choice: late light gives the city relief, while night turns it into a flat field of lights. If you want both, stay until dark — at dusk each of them is half finished.

Take care

You cannot walk between these three stops, so plan the day around a car and arrange the way back as well. Carry cash in the Ghouta; the roadside takes no cards. The towns of the eastern Ghouta are still under repair, so do not plan them as sights and follow local advice. The museum’s fee and hours change, so confirm them at the door. The top of Qasioun is windy and cool in the evening; take a light layer even in summer.
