From Shahba to Umm al-Zaytoun, Shaqqa and Mushannaf: a day in the Roman Hauran

Three villages of the Roman Hauran on the eastern edge of the Lajat, in a single day. The kalybe of Umm al-Zaytoun is dated to 282 by its own inscription; Shaqqa became a city in 287; Mushannaf keeps a temple to Zeus and Athena in the middle of the village. The route starts in Shahba and ends in As-Suwayda. It covers 69 kilometres and lets you see two examples of the kalybe, a building type found only in the Hauran, on the same day. One thing needs saying first: As-Suwayda province has been in armed conflict since July 2025, and this route cannot be driven today. The plan below applies once the area reopens.

The route

From Shahba head north to the Damascus–As-Suwayda road: Umm al-Zaytoun is 8 kilometres away, fifteen minutes. The village is visible from the road; the old quarter is on the west side and is entered on foot. The road to Shaqqa turns east and winds through villages for 14 kilometres, about twenty-five minutes. In Shaqqa the ruins stand among the town’s streets, so leave the car at the roadside. Mushannaf lies to the south-east, 21 kilometres on; the temple is in the middle of the village, among the houses. At the end of the day, As-Suwayda is 27 kilometres away.

Timing

Be in Umm al-Zaytoun at 08:30. The rock sheet of the Lajat reads best in low morning light, and 35 minutes is enough for the kalybe. Leave at 09:30 and reach Shaqqa around 10:00. Give it an hour and a half: the Kaisariyeh, the old church dedicated to Saint George, and a second kalybe. You saw the first one half an hour earlier, so the type makes sense here. Stop for lunch in Shaqqa. Set off for Mushannaf at 13:30 and allow 40 minutes for the frieze and the courtyard. Leave for As-Suwayda around 15:30. Driving on the plateau after dark is best avoided.

It bears repeating that this route does not apply today. Umm al-Zaytoun sits on the Damascus–As-Suwayda road, where the 2025 fighting took place. The province is not under effective central government control, and ceasefire violations continued throughout 2026. The present condition of all three villages has not been confirmed by independent sources. Even when the area reopens, three things stay the same. Shaqqa lies at 1070 metres: ice and snow in winter, no shade in summer. The ruins stand among lived-in houses, so ask before entering courtyards and before photographing people. Village roads can take longer than the map suggests; confirm the route locally before setting out.
